Gabriela Mistral was born among the hills of Chile’s Elqui Valley but spent much of her adult life abroad. Yet, she never stopped longing for her homeland—so much so that she spent over twenty years writing a book in its honor: Poem of Chile. In it, she recounts a journey accompanied by a child and a huemul (Andean deer). Together, they travel the country from north to south, discovering the diverse species inhabiting each ecosystem. They pause to learn about trees, plants, and wildlife. The poems depict Chile with the precision born of Mistral’s curious and attentive gaze.
This work invites readers to explore Chile through eight poems selected by Andrea Casals Hill and Luz Valeria Oppliger Zan, authors of this book. Each poem is accompanied by literary and ecological insights, reflecting how Gabriela Mistral’s poetry helps us understand, love, and protect nature.
Additionally, the text is enriched with beautiful illustrations and QR codes that provide access to audio recordings of the texts, poems, and audio descriptions of the images—making Gabriela’s Territories accessible to both sighted and visually impaired readers.
